Kate Festo

Kate Festo is a lifelong stitcher and an EGA Certified teacher in silk and metal thread embroidery, who is authorized to teach rozashi by the American designate of the Kunimitsu Rozashi Studios in Japan. She has taught locally in Connecticut and at EGA and American Needlepoint Guild chapters in the New York tri-state area, private residences and the public library in her hometown. She is a member of the Embroiderers’ Guild of America, the American Needlepoint Guild, the National Academy of Needlearts, the Japanese Embroidery Center, and the National Embroidery Teachers Association.



Pure Calm | 1-Day Class | Friday, April 30, 2021

Blue is a symbol of purity in Japanese tradition and is used in this design to calmly lead the stitcher towards simple, subtle beauty while working the piece as an inset for a small Lee® purse.  This design is stitched on silk “ro” scrim, using tightly twisted Japanese silk rozashi and brocade threads to create variations on traditional geometric Japanese rozashi patterns.  Students will learn basic rozashi techniques and how to handle these materials in this class.

Instructions include a color copy of design and schematic page with all sections identified, wooden frame with ro silk scrim attached, design drawn on ro, needle, Japanese silk rozashi in dark blue, light blue, yellow, gold brocade silk thread, round purse 3 3/4" in diameter.


Gentle Tulip | 2-Day Class | Saturday, May 1 - Sunday, May 2, 2021

Tulips are usually short lived, but this one will last well past summer.  This piece is stitched on silk faced satin, using silk and metal thread embroidery techniques.  Students will handle silk floss threads, attach padding materials and stitch with gold threads as they work the design elements of this quiet beauty. The silk and gold threads, and other materials, are used to further inspire the continued use of the unique threads and materials of this technique.

Instructions, needles, silk foundation fabric, muslin backing fabric, stranded silk floss threads, metallic Japan #5 thread, 3/8” trim gold embellishment braid, gilt pearl purl size super metal thread, gilt pearl purl #2 metal thread, wire purl #6 green metal thread, gilt rough purl #6 metal thread, gilt bright check purl #5 metal thread, gilt check thread #5, gold silk couching thread, gold colored wool felt, champagne colored silk with Pellon® stabilizer attached.
